Black Cabs in London for the corporate customer - want to know a cheaper and better alternative? ICC has conducted extensive research on the corporate taxi market in London. Our research has led us to some revelatory facts. Did you know that Black Cabs on a corporate account are generally 30-40% more expensive than a luxury Mercedes chauffeur with a 'suited and booted' driver? The reason for this is the structure of the Black Cab service - all the Black Cab drivers are self-employed and have fixed meter costs. Therefore the corporate account user will pay (1) a 'run in' charge - i.e. the cost on the meter for the taxi to come from wherever it is when booked to the pick-up point, (2) an administration fee for the booking company (be it Dial-a-Cab, Radio Taxi, ComCab, or any other), this is generally between 5 and 15% of the total journey cost, (3) a booking fee, usually a further 5% of total journey cost or a flat fee, (4) the actual cost of the journey - this will be on the meter and will be unpredictable, (5) any waiting or parking charges - waiting time will always be charged on in full as it appears on the meter and needs to go to the driver, and (6) VAT. Executive taxis on the other hand are able to offer single rate journeys and, as mentioned above, these work out at, on average 30-40% less than the Black Cabs overall charge for the same journey (of course waiting time and parking charges still apply to Private Hire although can also be reduced). Why then do people continue to spend millions and millions of pounds per year on corporate Black Cab accounts? That's a very good question. Apart from the obvious answers of laziness and ignorance there are some very good reasons for having a Black Taxi account notwithstanding the potentially huge waste of costs. These are as follows: (1) Immediate availability; and (2) Uniformity of service. In relation to (1) clearly the Black Taxis boast fleets of several thousand cars compared with the generally low hundreds of the executive car services. However this bald fact can be misused by the Black Taxi service salesmen. The fleet numbers often cover the fleets for the whole of Greater London and also only about 50-60% of them are on the road at any one time and of these only a small fraction in any one place at any one time (e.g. the City of London). Therefore if a company signs up 2 executive car companies with a combined fleet of several hundred and where these suppliers' clients are centered in the same geographical area as the client in question e.g. the City of London, comparable, if not better asap pick-up times can genuinely be achieved. The trick is (a) finding the right executive car companies - ICC helps with this, and (b) getting the right KPI's in place so that performance can be measured and monitored properly - again we advise on this. Once this is done most companies can save hundreds of thousands of pounds for a better service. ICC has helped many companies do just this. In relation to point (2) 'uniformity of service' this can be a real issue. Companies like their clients to see them in Black Taxis and employees often feel that the type of taxi they get is commensurate with their status. However such uniformity is easily achievable within the executive car arena. For example a client could ask that all staff except senior managers and directors get standard executive cars (i.e. late registration BMW's, Audis, Rovers, etc) and the S-Class Mercedes service is reserved only for important clients and very senior staff. One-stop-shop Taxi Solutions'One stop shop' solutions are increasingly being sought by astute corporate purchasers who recognise the potential savings and are alive to the service issues. One of the first things to consider is how will you be using the car? Will you use it to commute to work? Will you use it to carry the family around from place to place. This will give you a really solid grip on the road. How you will potentially use your vehicle should really dictate which type or kind of vehicle you purchase.
So now we arrive at color choices. Again, so many. Now this is really up to you. Generally, lighter color cars can get visibly dirtier more easily. Darker color cars will hide the dirt and grime more easily. Therefore, if you are not one to wash your car every week or even month, a darker color car may be right for you. But again, totally up to you on the color. There's really no template to go by when choosing. Although, a red corvette may catch the eye of police more than a grey truck.
And now the inside of the car. The interior. What options would you want to have on the inside. Now, a lot of options come standard, even CD player nowadays along with a possible mp3 plug in. But there are other things like heated seats, leather, a better sound system. As yourself if you really need these things, or even, are they a necessity? But if you really want them, and they are in your budget, go for it.
Again with the money. Insurance rates will vary with what type of car you buy. Buy a little, low horsepower, bland car and the rate will most likely be lower than if you were driving around in a sports car. Check with your insurance company beforehand to investigate further.
Another aspect of car buying to look into is who will ultimately be servicing the car in the event of anything major, other than the occasional oil and windshield wiper fluid change. If there is no authorized dealer of the car you want to buy near you, say a BMW or Mercedes Benz dealer, you may want to go with a domestic car that most mechanics will be able to work and do repairs on. While not fine needle thorough, those are some things to go by. Just look at cars and ask yourself questions about it.

Here in Southern California, there are a good number of BMW and Mercedes dealerships around. In fact, a few years ago, I read that So. Cal. was the largest market in the WORLD for BMW's and Mercedes. I don't know if that's still the case but S. Cal. continues to remain big enough to mean something to these German manufacturers.
Lately, both MBZ and BMW have responded to lemon law claims with the "tampering" defense, i.e. that the consumer tampered with the vehicle to produce repeated problems. In particular, MBZ and BMW have targeted persons of Armenian and Russian descent who have made such claims.
In fairness to BMW and Mercedes, there have been reported tampering cases where consumers with contacts within the dealerships have subtly altered the electronics of the vehicle to produce "codes", check-engine lights and other electrical malfunctions which would then give rise to a lemon law claim after not being repaired after some repair attempts. However, what we're seeing now is MBZ and BMW stretching the "tampering" defense to just about any lemon law claim, particularly if the complaint involves electronics. As with prior cases, they appear to be targeting Armenian and Russian consumers.
What is particularly unfair about this is the fact that MBZ and BMW vehicles frequently have legitimate electrical defects which give rise to legitimate lemon claims. This is one of the reasons that these manufacturers are stretching the "tampering" defense well beyond its proper boundaries.
If you have a lemon claim AND IF your vehicle's defect is electrical in nature, AND PARTICULARLY IF you are Armenian or Russian, here is how you "short-circuit" the "tampering" defense:
1. When you bring your vehicle in for a repair attempt, deliver a written note to the service writer with the following: "Because of repeated instances of _______________________(describe electrical defect, i.e. "check engine light illumination"), I am considering bringing a lemon law claim for replacement or repurchase of my vehicle. I am concerned that [BMW] [MERCEDES] will accuse me of having tampered with the vehicle's electronics to falsely create a lemon law claim. THEREFORE, I INSIST THAT, DURING THIS REPAIR VISIT, YOU UNDERTAKE ANY AND ALL NECESSARY INSPECTIONS OF THE VEHICLE TO EITHER CONFIRM OR RULE OUT THE EXISTENCE OF ANY TAMPERING." You can bring this note to the dealership as many times as you want, but once will probably suffice.
2. Obviously keep a copy of the note for your own records.
3. If the vehicle remains unrepaired, you have your lemon law claim in place and you have essentially undermined their "tampering defense" by yourself throwing it into the open for an inspection specifically to either prove or rule out the tampering. This will obviously lend credibility to any future lemon law claim you may have.

VAUXHALL OMEGA
Produced from 1994 - 2003, the Vauxhall Omega was an executive car available as a saloon or an estate; its design was intended to rival other conventional prestige cars including the Ford Granada/Scorpio & the Rover 800.
The Omega had a good reputation; spacious, comfortable, well-equipped & built for strong performance. Unfortunately, this & other similar models were discontinued due to potential buyers being lured away by the 'better' reputation of rival brands like the Audi A6 or the BMW 5-Series.
HISTORY
Vauxhall have been offering large saloons since the 1950's, with the aim of rivalling those made by more prestigious brands (at the time) such as Ford. The best known Vauxhall saloon was the Cresta, (also offered as the Velox which was less highly specified).
These cars were brought out in 1957, with the PB model being released in 1962. This was succeeded in 1965 by the PC model. These were discontinued in 1972, when the Ventora and Victor FE were brought out. These cars were produced until 1978, after which they were replaced by the Royale and the 1st generation Carlton. This version of the Carlton was made until 1986, at which point, the 2nd edition Carlton went on sale. This was then replaced by the Omega in 1993.
VAUXHALL OMEGA TYPES
April 1994: Estate & Saloon versions of the Vauxhall Omega were launched with a choice of either a 2.0 or 2.5-litre V6 petrol powerplants or a 2.5-litre turbodiesel unit
June 1994: The 3.0 V6 petrol engine became available. September 1997: A fresh design saw a new nose and tail design & more standard equipment became available.
May 1998: An LPG option for 2.0-litre petrol-engine cars became available
October 1999: A re-styled, 2.2-litre petrol engine joined a new range.
November 2000: The original 2.5TD engine was replaced by a 2.2 DTI turbo diesel engine.
January 2001: The 2.5-litre engine was replaced by a 2.6-litre V6 petrol engine, while the 3.0 engine was replaced by a 3.2-litre V6.

Only one generation of Omega was available in the UK. However, there was an earlier edition available in Europe - sold in the UK as the Carlton.
The 1st generation Opel Omega - known as the Carlton in the UK - was available in Lotus form. At the time of launch, it was the fastest ever family saloon with the capability of speeds up to 177mph due to its 377bhp engine.
The 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine which was available until 2000, was supplied by BMW. It was the exact same engine as that which was fitted to the company's 3 & 5 Series.
In the USA, the Omega was known as the Cadillac Catera
The plug was pulled on a new version of the Omega (the V8) which was due to go on sale in 2001, because there were concerns regarding the potential unreliability of the car.
